Henry Chasia – Executive Deputy Chairperson,
e-Africa Commission, NEPAD

Dr Chasia is Executive Deputy Chairperson, e-Africa Commission. The Commission was announced in October 2001 by Minister Ivy Matsepe-Cassaburri, Chairperson of the Ministerial Oversight Committee of the African Ministers of Communication. In September 2002, the Commission was adopted by the NEPAD Steering Committee as its Task Team for ICT, responsible for the development and implementation of the NEPAD ICT programme. The Steering Committee action was endorsed by the HSGIC at its meeting in Abuja in November 2002.

In this position, Dr Chasia is the Executive Head of the Commission with responsibility, under NEPAD, to establish the Commission, build its partnership programme, raise the funding, develop and implement the NEPAD ICT projects. The Commission has established its Secretariat at the CSIR, forged a strong partnership programme with the private sector and with three development partners, through which it has raised substantial funding for its work. The implementation of the major NEPAD ICT projects, including the East African Submarine Cable and the NEPAD e-Schools Initiative, has now entered national processes in numerous of African countries.
