RAMFUL YOGENDRANATH, Principal Health Economist, Ministry of Health, Mauritius

Yogendr’nath Ramful, at present occupy the post of Principal Health Economist. After obtaining an honours degree in Economics from the University of Poona (India) in 1978, I started my career as a teacher in a private secondary school. In 1985, I joined the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development as Economist. During the same year, I got my posting at the Ministry of Health and Quality of Life. In 1992, I took a new job of Community Health Development Coordinator. As from December 2000, I joined the post of Principal Health Economist in the Ministry of Health and Quality of Life. With more than 20 years experience in the Ministry of Health and Quality of Life, I perform duties related to the job of health economist, which include amongst others, health planning and human resources planning with budgeting and projection estimates. I am also at present the Chairperson of the National Health Accounts Committee in Mauritius. Besides, I serve as a member of the Expert Committee on Health System Development Programme of the East, Central and Southern Africa-Health Community (ECSA-HC). For this year, I am the chairperson of the Expert Committee. I am also a member of the International Health Economist Association. My services as consultant have been retained on several occasions. I participated in the first consultative meeting to initiate National Health Accounts (NHA) in Seychelles. On several occasions, my services were retained to train trainers in NHA by the ECSA-HC. At present, I have been selected by ECSA-HC in the development of an NHA Interim Projection Model. I presented the first NHA Report of the Republic of Mauritius at the National Symposium of NHA held in Barcelona, Spain last year and at the 42nd Regional Health Ministers’ Conference of ECSA-HC in February 2006.
