SABMiller is one of the world's largest brewers with brewing interests or distribution agreements in over 60 countries across five continents. Today, over 100 years after the South African Breweries Ltd was founded in Johannesburg, SABMiller has a large part of its business, its history and its pride invested in Africa. Of over 50 000 employees worldwide, over 14 000 work in SABMiller’s African businesses.
In June 2005 SABMiller received Highly Commended and Big Tick Awards from Business in the Community for its contribution to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals in Africa.
Lowering the human and commercial costs of HIV/Aids
HIV/Aids is a major problem in Africa, with an estimated 25 million people infected, and a growing concern in other parts of the world where SABMiller operates, including Asia and Eastern Europe. Apart from its well-documented human consequences, especially in the absence of affordable antiretroviral treatment, it poses a significant risk to our ability to run our business and sustain our sales growth.
For example, it can impact our staff’s productivity through ill-health and absenteeism and also reduce the size of our markets, as well as our customers’ spending power.
To limit these impacts, we’ve developed a comprehensive strategy to tackle HIV/Aids among our staff and their dependants and help those already infected. This is now being applied at each of our businesses in Africa
