EDWIN MACHARIA, Director of the Rural Initiative for CHAI

Edwin Macharia is currently the Director of the Rural Initiative for the Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative (CHAI). Launched in 2005 by President Clinton, the Rural Initiative responds to the fact that despite increasing access to HIV/AIDS care and treatment services across the world, most of these services are still limited to urban areas. The goal of the Rural Initiative is therefore to develop and enable the replication of care and treatment services in rural areas, which means working in resource-poor settings, and serving the poorest communities.

Prior to this role, Mr. Macharia served as the Deputy Country Director in Tanzania. . He was part of the team that assisted the Tanzanian Government develop the National Care and Treatment plan. In his tenure in Tanzania, he also served as the Program Advisor to the Program Manager of the National AIDS Control Program (NACP), was a core team member in the development and initial implementation of the successful $207M Global Fund Round 4 award for Care and Treatment, and managed the range of activities necessary to scale up Tanzania’s response to HIV/AIDS. In addition to working in Tanzania, Mr. Macharia was the lead in establishing the Kenya office, as well as a team member in the development of the Operational Plan for Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Care, Management and Treatment for South Africa.

Before joining the Clinton Foundation, Mr. Macharia was a management consultant in the New York office of McKinsey & Company.  He holds a degree in Biology from Amherst College.
