ANN KEELING, Acting Deputy Secretary-General (Development) and Director, Social Transformation Programmes Division, Commonwealth Secretariat, London

Ann Keeling joined the Commonwealth Secretariat in February 2005 as Director, Social Transformation Programmes Division. She came from the UK Department for International Development (DFID) where she was Head of Policy and Senior Social Development Adviser for the Europe, Middle East and Americas Division.  She has 25 years experience as a social development professional, including 15 years spent working overseas in Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and the Caribbean.  Ann has worked for the governments of Papua New Guinea, Pakistan and Britain (DFID and the British Council), and the United Nations. She has also undertaken short term consultancies in Africa and the Middle East. Ann started her international development career as an education planner in Papua New Guinea having studied in the UK, USA and China. She has worked on a range of development policy reform initiatives and programmes in various fields including health and gender equality. The 8 years she spent in Pakistan included a posting as Senior Adviser Gender and Poverty for the United Nations and the Government of Pakistan. She is a Trustee for the NGO Womankind and sits on the BBC’s Appeals Advisory Committee advising on international development.
